4th gen vs 5th seats... (pics finally)

Ok, I found an awesome deal on 4th gen VTEC (leather) seats and I decided to snag them with the possibly of installing them in my car or selling them. People are always asking "do 4th gen seats fit in a 5th gen?". If you've done your research (which means searching and reading), you'll know people have said the fronts match up but not the rears. Here are the pics between the 2 generations...

4th gen VTEC (left) 5th gen SE (CDN) (right) passenger seats

Rear mounting holes and brackets with the ronts already mounted.

Right side

Left side

5th gen (left) vs 4th gen right (right) driver's side...

The mounting holes and brackets on the driver's side had the same challenges as the passenger side.

Anyhow, the 4th gen has more seating opinions and seems to have more support on the outside of the back. I'm looking into make brackets so swapping seats will be a breeze. For now, these 4th gen seats will stay in the living room!

Cheers,

Keith

Can you swap the rails on them to make them fit?

I looked into that too... The right answer is no. I'm sure anything it possible with a big amount of modification. One side of rails can be used. But the other side is riveted into the seat itself.

No, those are VTEC leather seats. If was CDN, I would have said SRV...

Nice job; the 4th gen seats feel soooo much better than the 5th gen's, IMO.

Making the brackets isn't that hard, just get some mild steel bar stock from Home Depot, a cutting disk, some grade 8 bolts/nuts, the proper drill bit, and a vise to bend it in.

I made brackets for all 4 corners when I put the Celica GTS seats in my 92, it was a bit time consuming but worth it in the end.

^^ why grade 8? Is that a legal requirement or something? I've seen grade 5s take a lot of abuse without failing...

Keith, is the leather on those 4th gen VTEC seats original? It's kind of hard to tell from the pictures... The factory leather on the seating surface and lower portion of the seatback is perforated, just an FYI.

The foam cushion on the 4th gen seats is thinner than that of 5th gen. I have owned both cars. The 4th gen seats are not as supple as 5th gen's. You can do a side-by-side comparison and you'll know what I mean. Also the 4th gen driver seat is not height adjustable. Just a couple of things to take into considerations.

I got to love the non detachable headrest for the 4th gen. It just looks more of a race feature. Muahaha

Just because the grade 8's only cost a little bit more than the weaker bolts; and do you really wanna skimp on parts like bolts and nuts, which will be holding you in the car in a crash, simply to save maybe a buck?

Man, I kept my stock tan, cloth 4G seats...and probably always will. If I ever DO sell the lude, which isn't an unlikely possibility at this point, I'd want the owner to know the joy of feeling the 4G stock seats. They were really nice, and LOW. The ONLY complaint I have w/ the SRD's is that they feel WAY higher than the stock seats. I want to break out the dremmel and see how low I can get the Wedge engineering brackets.

I was referring to the stock 4th gen VTEC leather upholstery.
