How many years have you been interested in automotive performance? Count only the years since you had a valid driver's license (no answers like "since I was 3"). Auto performance counts as anything from bodykits to stereos to superchargers.

I've been a car nut since I was 3. No I'm serious, one of the first memories I have is being strapped into the back seat of dad's mate's new car, a brand spanking new HSV Group A Commodore. That was way back in 1988.
So the years since I've had a valid drivers licence, 8.
I installed a stereo system in my first car before I even had a license. The performance mods came shortly after.

Ever since I can remember, I'd say 20 years, LOL. I have a catalog of 12 years of Road and Track magazines I've only misplaced a few issues. If anyone needs any road-tests from 96-current, I can scan them in for ya.
Since I was 16- about 20 yrs.- As the oldest I always helped Dad work on the family cars.
My first real mods other than stereos were on my very first purchase in 1987: A white '84 VW GTI. (Mk. I to Euro geeks; square headlights and the long tails). I picked up the spacers, etc. to mount up a set of Porsche D90 rims to a set of sweet Pirelli P7's. The stance of the car was incredible. The outer edge of the tire and rim was flush with the edge of the flared fenders- it was a lot of tire for a car that size. Those pix are on that old stuff called film packed away somewhere.
The next modded ride came when I traded the GTI in for a new '89 Accord LXi coupe, also in white. I purchased the factory EQ and foglights, which came with black plastic "H" covers. Shortly after the purchase I mounted a set of American Racing 5-spoke rims with raised white lettered Goodyear Eagle GT's. That might sound nasty now, but they looked good on the white car. I might be able to uncover some pix of that one- if I do I'll post them.
The '89 Accord coupe was traded in for a new '92 Lude that I still drive today. I immediately started out on the quest for mods, as I still do today....

I wasn't able to find the pix of my '84 VW GTI with the Porsche rims/Pirelli P7's, but here is a link to a webpage I set up with some before/after photos of my '89 Accord LX-i coupe. The first 3 are stock (besides the ski rack and window tint). The foglights and an EQ for the stereo were factory options. Obviously the factory fogs at the time weren't as integrated as the ones on today's Hondas.
The last 2 pix are of the car with the 5-spoke American Racing rims. I later mounted a set of raised white letter Eagle GT's which looked really nice and tied the whole look together by breaking up the dark area between the wheel well and thr rims. Unfortunately I can't locate any pix with the complete Eagle GT/American Racing rim combo. I only rocked that setup a few months before I took them off and sold the set when I traded the Accord in for my Lude. World of BionicKris

ive loved cars for a long time, always used to go to my friends house and look through magazines saying what cars we were gonna get when we could drive...
Well, based on the rules of the thread, I'm at 9 years, but I bought my first car, 1991 Chevrolet Beretta GTZ when I was 14. I had a stereo in it shortly after and sold it before I even could drive it legally...
I have been into cars as long as I remember, mainly thanks to my dad, who is a huge car buff himself. He has always kept his cars in excellent shape, and now has a mint, all original 1968 Mustang coupe..
I can't remember a time when I didn't either play with hotwheels, or draw cars with huge motors. so I guess around 29 years or so?
same here... so thats about 24 years since the first time i started playing with hot wheels. didn't help the fact that my dad would take me out all the time in either his 78 porsche or the 68 mini cooper. my first car was an 85 volvo 740 turbo, which i proptly started ordering parts for it from ipd (upgraded turbo/intercooler, exhaust, stabilizer bars, intake, etc... no wonder why my high school gf was always pissy )

I started really taking an interest when i got my license (10 years ago), but my obsession with learning everything I can about them sprung up around 2000/2001 when I got my first prelude, a 1988 SI.. I loved that thing, and wanted to know all I could about it.
I even ended up custom fabbing non-flip headlights with hellas.. *memories*
Count 'em- 20. I'm on my 5th lude & previously owned an S2k. I've owned American and Japanese and they both have their merits. I've spent more years in and under cars now than on this earth. I plan to keep driving and working on them until I'm 6 feet under.
since 1993......my first strong memory of my -car obsession- was of the giant car show/sale thing in charolett, north carolina at lows motor speedway in the spring......it was sweet i cant wait till the first weekend in april to go down there again.

I picked up the love for cars at about 8 truely because my brother had a low rider truck (he is 10 years older than me). It was the coolest thing since ice cubes.
I personally started my own car obsession when I was 15. I had a 88 CRX with skated out wheels, 12" Player Rims, and a system. Don't make fun of me, in 1998 it was HOT!

If you mean working on cars & owning them... then about 7years.
If you mean since i was able to enjoy looking at cars and actually being able to identify the ones i liked... then 15 yrs. I was one of them little kids who would impress you by shouting out the names of cars as they passed us on the highway.
7 years here, I know it says since valid drivers license but I got my car before I got a license and started working on her (a 1987 prelude) so that I would have a car to drive once I got my license. I've loved preludes ever since.
I got into cars at a young age. Like many, it was a parent that passed down the sickness. However, unlike most that have posted, it was my mother, not my father that passed it down. My mom street raced in the early and mid 70's. She had a '68 Camaro, a Mustang with the CobraJet engine in it, among other hot rods. More recently she had a 2004 Z06 and currently a BMW 335i (yeah, the twin turbo model).
My first car was a Mazda Mx-6. I did the stereo thing because there really wasn't a market for that car in the performance area. That was pre-Fast and Furious, so it was much harder to find Import parts then, especially for cars like that. After that I got a brand new Nissan Sentra SpecV the first year they came out. Traded that in for a 98 Camaro SS. Built it up to 550 whp then fell asleep at the wheel and totalled it. Bought it back from the insurance company and put the engine in a Z28 Camaro with a built auto instead of the built manual for drag racing purposes. Also did more head work and put a bigger cam in it to bump it up to the 600 whp range. Sold that car to concentrate on finishing college. In my last year of college the bug struck again when I saw the 2005 Dodge Ram Daytona Editions so I bought that. Decided I didn't want to mod a truck that only had a production of 5000 ever, so I am now selling it and have bought a Prelude to do a little messing with. My love of Preludes came from my sister's ex-husband who had a fully built turbo Prelude about 5 years ago. It was featured in the magazine HCI at one point.
And there's my story. . .

I really have been into cars for as long as I can remember. Growing up my dad had a 69 Nova SS with a 400 small block he built himself. I started working on it with him as soon as I learned to count/recognize numbers and could figure out what a Phillips screw driver was. I was a tool ***** until I was like 10 when he taught me how to change oil. I got my first car when I was 14 (1984 Camaro Berlinetta with a 305. Started taking that apart the day I got it. If you go from when I can remember, like 18 years, since I did my first oil change, 14 years, since first car, 10 years, since license, 8 years. You guys can decide how long it has been in your own way.
One of my earliest memories is of when I was 3/4 and Knight Rider was switched from Tuesday night to Thursday night. I was one upset kid. My favorite shows when I was young were Knight Rider, Dukes, Transformers, Magnum PI. My favorite movies... and this is before I was 7: Cannonball Run, Cannonball Run 2, Wraith, Death Race 2000. I only played with hotwheels and ONLY hotwheels. Matchbox cars were never the right size compaired to my hot wheels so they failed.
ive liked cars for a long time. but when i got into junior high i began liking lowriders. thats where i got bit by the project bug. i didnt actually build my first project til 2000. so its been about 8 yrs for me.

My uncle and his friends where gear heads so I've been around cars since I was just able to walk. I can remember wanting a late 70's RX7 since they were one of the first cars that had a 5 speed. I didnt even know what a 5 spd was but they had one, they looked cool, and as a kid marketing worked on me!
I've been a car nut since I was 3. No I'm serious, one of the first memories I have is being strapped into the back seat of dad's mate's new car, a brand spanking new HSV Group A Commodore. That was way back in 1988.

Whats up Collin? That's a badass car. Please tell me your dads friend still has it. One recently sold for at an auction $87,000. There were only like 700 of them made.
I've been into cars every since I can remember. I worked on plenty of cars with my dad and with friends before I even had a licence. But I guess technically it's been 6 yrs.
haha yes! same, since fetus, though i started out liking trucks before anything...then onto oldschool american muscle (primarily the 442, roadrunner, and others)
but ive only had a liscense for about 3 years now.. lol
I rocked the 1986 Toyota carolla for a year and a half
Then the 1988 Pontiac firebird, it only had a 305, turned a profit on that,
And currently the 99 Prelude Base
Been driving since 16, but always been into cars. I got my license at 18 and tinkered lightly, but didn't get big into modding and racing until I got my Prelude, which was over eight years ago!

Since around 1967. There was a red Lotus Europa parked down the street. I loved walking to school that year.
Of course, that was also the peak of the muscle car era. Great cars were everywhere, even in the small town in NC where I grew up. There were Shelby's, a Superbird, one of those Daytona Chargers. lots of fast Camaros, Mustangs, and Corvettes, R/T Challengers, Novas everywhere, jacked up, dual rear high-performance coon tails on CB antennas and all. All the "other" cars you see in F&F. I'm sorry you guys missed all that.
Back then I had a 1968 6-cyl. AMC Javelin, but was too poor to do anything interesting with it. Then I got my Prelude, in 1998, and a few years later discovered track days, and I became that teenager again. Or rather, a responsible teenager who tears up the track, not the streets.
