Coming to LA

All the LA peeps, I'm looking for some advice. I got accepting to USC's graduate school of engineering for Fall 2005, and I want to get some info on the area. Part of my decisions will be about housing, and part of it is about cars.

I will have to figure out a way to get my Fujitsubo header smogged, so if anyone knows someone I can, uh, "pursade" to help that along I'd be grateful. Also I need a sense of how bad theft is, especially around the USC campus area. Got to figure out how paranoid I need to be. It's almost a non-issue where I live right now, so I'm just trying to be prepared for Cali.

Any housing information would be great. Cheap is a big bonus, but not sh1thouse cheap.
