I live in Jersey City. The rent will be around $750-$1200 for a one bedroom/studio. It depends in the area. Stay away from downtown JC. It has become so overpriced that it's ridiculous.
Your best bet will be to look into the Jersey City Heights. Nice neighborhoods and the rent is a bit cheaper. The only thing is that parking will be a major PITA.
I'm not too sure about Hoboken but I think the prices are a bit higher.
Jersey City is expensive, especially down by the financial district. Hoboken can be even worse, though Hoboken is a very nice, clean town with a lot to do. Expect to pay a minimum of $800-1000 for a once bedroom and upwards of $1200-1900 for a two-bedroom.
I'd reccomend Bayonne over Jersey City (little bit safer and cleaner) but Hoboken over both of those.
Oh... and parking is a B!TCH in any of them. Mostly fighting for side street parking.

I do not need to explain anything to you.
My broken wings still strong enough to cross the ocean with.
My broken wings how far should I go drifting in the wind.
Take a look into Astoria, Queens or Greenpoint/Williamsburg in Brooklyn. The latter two were gHeTtOs back in the day but the city has spent alot of $ cleaning it up. Alot of "yuppies" and middle-class singles live in those areas now as an alternative to Manhattan.
You may want to check out Elizabeth. Some areas are very nice and the rent is cheap around there. $550-$650 for a one bedroom and most places provide parking.
try wirghtstown, or Burlington Co. its not ghetto but small enough you wont pay more than 800 a mo. jersey is by far the most expensive state i have ever lived in houses that go for 3-400k here go for like 1 maybe 200k back home in NY. jersey sucks!!
