With 7-8 grand if you wanted to do the install yourself you could make a reliable 1/4 runner out of your car ( faster than the Type-S motor will get you ) just by buying a Jackson Racing Super charger. That will cut you about 4 grand, and you'll still have room for a mild bottom end build up if you want it. You could also go the turbo route, but that is often a more picky setup.
Forced induction often gets a bad rap as being unreliable, causing premature wear, and causing a whole myriad of problems, but all you really need to do is take good care of the car, make sure you retard the timing properly, and potentially lower the compression. The H22 really is a pretty strong motor. If you were to go the extra step and have some better pistons+rods put in, and have everything re-seated and blueprinted (tight squeeze for 3K, but possible), you could make a very nice Lude; and not worry about it blowing up on you.
At the same time, you would be able to go balls out in a junker if you wanted to
