MAX = max retard = safer.
the car will drive..... badly.... with it all the way up there. i would put it a bit past halfway, meaning a bit closer to MAX than halfway. set your static fuel pressure around 70psi. take a spin and give it a few stabs of full throttle at 4000rpm or so in 2nd gear. if you don't hear any sort of strange clicking / rapping / metallic buzzing sounds from the motor, back the BTC off "towards" min a click or two at a time.
on 91 octane gas with the stock injectors i would NEVER turn it closer to "min" than 4 clicks. NEVER. i'd start getting nervous around 5 clicks even if it sounded fine.

the timing knob....i want it to be pretty safe till i tune it
is it suppose to be safer towards max or min? i might just put it in the middle.....what setting do you think i can possible go to very safely
