Importance of replacing oil drain gasket

About 1000 miles ago I did an oil change. Recently I ahve been loosing lots of oil (not sure yet if its a leak or burning oil). I just realized I did not change the oil drain plug gasket when I did the oil change (service manual recommends you change it everytime). Is there anyway this could be causing a leak?

I just want to cover every minor possibility, before I start diagnosing for big problems causers.

Thanks, jordan
