It really depends on the individual - you'll get people say that they were born to drive manuals, and others that still can't! But the majority of the people who drive manuals will say it took a couple of weeks before they started to be sure of themselves. I took one course (mainly to appease my brother's insistance before I drove his car) and it was about 60 bucks I think (CDN). But I had practiced on a friends car before. That's really the best way to go is to borrow someone's old POS civic or something to practice on until you understand the mechanics of it all.

As for the reasons - well I enjoy driving and you can't be connected to the car without a clutch IMO. Plus, it means the majority of the people can't drive the car, and theives are less likely to even bother with your car.
