The h22a4 engine is a very good engine that has for example carbon fiber reinforced cylinder walls and a oil cooler that act to enhance the longevity of it.Unfortunately some engines are abused and then people come on line and call them oil burners and trash them .One way that can assess the engines health is by doing the following to check to see how much oil its burning.
1:Have the seller fully warm the engine up .
2: Then get out of the car and have the seller rev the engine hard a few times .
3: If each time the engine is reved hard only a little bit of smoke comes out I would guess it may be a good engine.
4: If the smoke comes out constant and smells oily then walk away from that deal.
My 1999 engine has 140k miles on it and burns not much more oil then when it was new. If you can find a engine with a clean exhaust like the one shown below on my car it would be sweet.
If the oil consumption is high , beside indicating a poor engine you will end up probably end up having to periodically having to pay someone to clean the egr ports from time to time .After purchase , irregardless of what the owner said,all internal and external belts should be replaced and any advise on other possible warn parts from the tech should be considered for replacement.
Here is some preventive maintenance recently done on my car.After removing all the parts to get to the timing belt, apparently their are some parts that are relatively easy to replace while that part to the engine is torn down .By replacing those parts ,the Honda tech was looking out for me.
