Chevy guy gone V-TEC Help! Question about exhaust

I recenty purchased a bone stock '99 Prelude V-TEC base model w/ auto trans. I lowered it and added a after-market alluminum under drive crank shaft
pulley. Then I added on some headers & free flow cat. What I noticed is it changed the power band of the V-TEC but it robbed the mid range & top end power. i ended up removing the exhaust & went back to stock. Can anyone explain why this happened or was I supposed to upgrade something when adding headers to a H22A. Mechanicaly the motor was perfect before the perf upgrade.
