spend the $300-400 and do it right. Otherwise you're gonna spend ~$100 on an ebay muffler including welding and in 6 months wish you had a catback. I wouldn't expect anymore than 10hp from a catback and ~2 from just a muffler.
edit: $1k for a Greddy system!? WTF are you getting your prices?
