VSS failing...

Ok so I did quite a bit of searching before posting so I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this...
About 10 months ago or so my Speedo crapped out. Came on here after getting the CEL code pulled and concluded that my VSS was faulty. Bought a new one, installed it, broke it on accident so got a replacement and installed it as well. About a month and a half ago the speedo would jump around like crazy when I went into VTEC and would sometimes stop working then come back. Then finally, it stopped working all together. What I'm wondering is what could be going wrong? I used to have a VAFCII quite awhile back and wiring was butt spliced in, no harness for me That didn't cause the problem tho as the VSS stopped working long after the VAFC got stolen. I also think the VSS I got to replace the old one was a non-VTEC model, would that make a diff? And other ideas as to what causes my VSS to crap out? Please help, thank you!
