You can fit just about anything under 2" without trimming. Above that and you need rings or trimming. Rings will only go so far until your pushing at the grill. I don't know how deep you can get with the combo but it should be more than enough.
Don't buy a coaxial setup. Most of them are lower end junk. The tweeter usually sticks out from the speaker, could cause clearance issues.
I personally would grab something from DLS. They seem to have the best bang for the buck these days. You should be able to pickup a set of their Reference MS6A for under your goal. It might require a little trimming of the plastic thing behind the speaker though. The RS5 would fit without any trimming, but then you are working with a 5 1/4.
I don't know if MB Quart is any good after they got bought out, but if you can find a deal on some of their older stuff its top notch. I picked up a set of pre-buyout Q series for 125 the other day.
I hear good things about Focal. I almost picked up their Polyglass components a few years ago but ended up finding a crazy deal on a kicker reference set. I wouldn't buy anything kicker makes anymore though.
Most of what JL sells is overpriced and has a very "in your face" sound to them. Their mid and upper end components are ok, but only if you get a crazy deal on em.
I think the rainbow germanium line is in your price range. Not totally sure about their price, but defiantly worth checking out.
Polk and Boston Acoustics were OK about 20 years ago... I really doubt they are worth what crutchfield wants for them. I am sure that you can find a better deal.
Ya never know when you are going to find a crazy deal on some used speakers. I'm sure that I am leaving out a few brands worth mention. Depending on where you live you might be able to find a few stores with some high end stuff around you, I always try to buy local.
