basicall an interferance engine means that when a valve is fully open (to let in air or let out exhaust) it can interfere with a piston at top dead center. Normally a valve is not fully open when a piston is at top dead center so this is not a problem.

but when a timing belt fails, the crank and pistons have enough momentom to keep spinning for a little while whereas the valves usually stop where they are (more or less). This means that a moving piston might come in contact with a stationary valve.

When this occurs, the valve is bent and will need to be replaced for the engine to run correctly.

If you search the board (or the internet for that matter) you can find what a leak down test is and how to perform one. It will tell you if you have any bent valves without having to remove the head from the block.
