they're high maintenance even if you keep it stock, especially given the age these vehicles are in now. things just start breaking down from wear and tear. and the parts are just not cheap. ive thrown too much money at it already just to keep it going, and my car's pretty dang stock still. in the last year as far as maintenance goes:
-window switches needed to be replaced
-master/slave clutch cylinders needed to be replaced
-power locks went out
-almost all pillowballs/bushings needed to be changed out
-tie rods went out
-needed new tires
-fans werent coming on early enough so it needed new thermostat and needed to be rewired
-vacuum lines needed to be fixed
-battery needed to be replaced
-secondary turbo went bad, had to change that out
-cat's dead
-just found out primary fuel injectors are leaking -
-the stock blow off valve is leaking
-had to reflush the coolant several times because of rust and weird stuff in the system
-fuel filter change/spark plugs/wires/lots of oil changes done every 1-2k miles
-hatch shocks are dead

.......
its an old car, lost of things break and need replacing just to keep it going -_-
whats your definition of too much hp? the car can be made to be fairly reliable if the owner reads up on them and takes care of the car by adding all the recommended reliability mods like a downpipe, a metal ast or ast elimination, alum radiator...etc. and ive seen some mildly modified rx7s running some quick times....but tuning and fuel are really important. just pulling off the restrictions you have bottlenecked at the exhaust can cause the car to go kaboom if you don't take care of all sides of the car.
