After a bunch of research I was able to determine that if you've got a good filter and you top off... it's really not an issue to change the oil every 7500 miles even if you burn a fair amount.
...and it's true that if you add oil, you're refreashing the additive package and extending the life of the oil...
The important thing is to get a REALLY good filter...
